The New Thought Revolution

In the early part of the 20th century there lived a woman named Dorothee Soelle; raised in Nazi Germany, she later became a professor of theology and wrote many books, but is best known for her radical views on religion and Christianity in particular. Here are three quotes from her.

  • The third world is a permanent Auschwitz.
  • Every theological statement must be a political statement as well.
  • God has no hands except from our hands.

She called fundamentalists Christo-fascists. She thought Christianity had lost its revolutionary quality which Jesus embodied. He was a revolutionary but, in her view, his life and teachings have been so distorted that Christianity is more about idolatry than a teaching to follow.

Jesus was the great teacher of love and forgiveness. Before him, the rule of the day was "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth."

We can see in our world that his teachings have proven too difficult for so many. It is easier to worship him than to do as he did. But not for everyone. There are millions of people doing loving things who are not Christians, but who follow the revolutionary idea that love is the power that makes all things new. New Thought is the revolution carried into the 21st century.
