The Art of Gratitude

"Think on these things; the good, the true and the beautiful."  Ancient wisdom, still good advice, but it takes real focus to do so when the news is so grim. One simple way to break through the gloom is to create a gratitude list.  There is an element to gratitude that is powerful. When we are actively engaged in it, all the space previously occupied by dark thoughts is taken.  Negativity is pushed out and light enters the mind.  The truth is, there is an infinite array of things to be grateful about, beginning with our own mind and body and extending beyond into the chair we are sitting on, the room, the colors, the cool drink of water and so on.

If we take nothing for granted, we will take care of everything.  It is all a gift and a temporary one, at that.  Nothing lasts forever, including our own body, but there is something allowing it all to appear, just for our use while we are here.  That may seem egocentric, but think about it.  Doesn't Nature serve us so beautifully?  Food growing on trees, water flowing freely, sunlight and fire and electricity for our discovery.  It is all incredibly intentional, it would seem. Gratitude is the only reasonable response.

Ancient ones spoke of the body as a temple; the temporary residing place of God.  Taking good care of it is a way of showing our gratitude for the form that is our vehicle for expression.  That would seem to naturally extend to the health and well-being of others.  Making sure everyone has access to food and water and shelter is another way of honoring the Something that allows for everything to be.  Gratitude is for us, God does not require it.  There is nothing to thank, really, not outside of ourselves.  But there are healing properties in it.  Today we will have thousands of moments to feel like the recipients of boundless gifts.  Keep saying Thank You and watch how much more alive you feel, how open to creative ideas you are, how fear dissipates.
