Our Universal Role

Emerson: "A little consideration of what takes place around us every day would show us that a higher law than that of our will regulates events."

He speaks of a stream of power and if we would put ourselves in accord with it, our lives could be so much easier. What goes on around us is Nature or the natural flow of growth, which he said was to teach us faith. He also meant that a higher intelligence, that same brilliance that is behind the universe and everything in it, is still and forever projecting its perfect knowing into visible effects. It is another way of saying "God is still in business."

This, of course, does not mean that we do nothing or that we have no desires or ideas of our own. I think he was trying to show how unnecessary is struggle; how effort is effortless if it is grounded in faith; how integral each life is to the evolution of the whole and therefore, we have the ability to place ourselves in that stream of power. The image that comes to mind is of one standing with arms outstretched and palms open to the heavens, saying "Use me, let me be the vehicle for your love, your joy, your constant supply, your vitality and peace." This is not a plea to an outer God, but a recognition of our inseparable place in it and our part in the revelation of its Nature.
